Going live
Each game has one destination, chosen on the New game page:
- Record only saves the game to the phone and streams nothing.
- YouTube streams to your signed-in channel.
- RTMP streams to any server that takes an RTMP or RTMPS link and a stream key.
Sign in to YouTube
Section titled “Sign in to YouTube”- Open Settings. Under Connected accounts, tap Sign in next to YouTube.
- A browser page opens. Choose the Google account that manages your channel.
- If that account manages a club or team channel (a brand channel), Google asks which channel to use. Pick the one you stream to.
- You return to the app, and Settings shows the channel’s name.
The channel must be enabled for live streaming in YouTube before the first stream. YouTube can take up to a day to turn that on for a new channel.
To switch channels, tap Sign out and sign in again.
New broadcast or scheduled game
Section titled “New broadcast or scheduled game”With YouTube chosen on the New game page, pick either:
- New broadcast: set its Privacy (public, unlisted or private) on the page. The title and privacy can also be changed later from the Gear pullout on the camera screen.
- A scheduled game from the Schedule tab. It goes live with the privacy and thumbnail it already has.
For a new broadcast, CheerCam creates it on YouTube as soon as the camera screen opens. That lets it test the connection. If you leave without going live, the broadcast is deleted again.
Stream to another service with RTMP
Section titled “Stream to another service with RTMP”Choose RTMP and enter the Server URL (starting with rtmp:// or rtmps://) and the Stream key your streaming service gives you. The app remembers them for next time.
The connection test
Section titled “The connection test”When the camera screen opens with a YouTube or RTMP destination, CheerCam sends a few seconds of video to the real server and measures what your connection carries. A card over the picture shows the upload speed, whether you are on Wi-Fi or cellular, and the stream qualities this phone offers:
| Quality | Bitrate | Upload needed |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 9.0 Mbps | 10.8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 6.0 Mbps | 7.2 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 4.5 Mbps | 5.4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 2.5 Mbps | 3.0 Mbps |
The 1080p qualities only appear on phones that can encode them smoothly.
- The best quality your connection carries with some room to spare is selected. Tap Use to accept it, or pick another row first.
- Qualities above what was measured are dimmed but can still be picked.
- If the test fails, the card reads Could not test the connection with a Retry button. You can still go live at 720p.
- Changing networks, for example from Wi-Fi to cellular, runs the test again. Test connection in the Gear pullout runs it on demand.
The test never blocks going live. Tapping Go live while the card is up starts at the selected quality.
Go live
Section titled “Go live”Tap Go live on the pill at the right of the picture. The pill turns amber while connecting, then red with LIVE and the elapsed time.
The status strip under the picture shows, left to right, the live state and time, the bitrate, the battery, where the stream is going and the stream quality.
When the connection drops or slows
Section titled “When the connection drops or slows”- If the connection slows, CheerCam lowers the picture quality on its own to keep the stream running. The strip shows capped while it does.
- If the connection drops, the pill turns amber and reads RECONNECTING. The app keeps retrying on its own. Leave it alone and it goes back to LIVE when the network returns.
- The recording on the phone carries on through both.
Record on the phone
Section titled “Record on the phone”The phone can save its own copy of the game, at the stream’s quality,, whether or not you are streaming. The recording keeps going if the stream drops.
- Tap the record circle at the right edge of the picture to start and stop. It turns into a red square while recording.
- Or switch Record to this phone in the Gear pullout.
- With Record only as the destination, there is no stream, just the recording.
The recording includes the scoreboard and graphics, exactly as viewers see them.
Stop the stream
Section titled “Stop the stream”Press and hold the LIVE pill. A lighter layer fills across it over about a second and a half, and the stream stops when it is full. Let go early and the stream carries on. A quick tap only shows a Hold to stop note, so a stray touch never ends the broadcast.
On YouTube, the broadcast is ended for you once the stream stops.
Leaving the camera screen with the Leave button asks first, and stops the stream and the recording if you confirm.
Where recordings end up
Section titled “Where recordings end up”Recordings and clips are saved with the game. Open the game from the Home tab to play them, and use Share to send them to the Photos app, a cloud drive, or another phone. On iPhone, recordings can also be found in the Files app under CheerCam.
The game page also lets you delete a game and its files when you no longer need them.
