Teams and rosters

Teams give the scoreboard its names, short forms, colours and logos, and give goals and penalties a player to name. They are optional. A game can always run as Home and Away.

Every team belongs to one sport. The selector along the top of the Teams tab picks which sport’s teams you see, and the app remembers your pick. The New game page only offers teams of the sport you chose.

  1. Pick the sport at the top of the Teams tab and tap +.
  2. Enter the Team name and a Short form of up to a few letters. The short form is what the scoreboard shows, for example CAL.
  3. Choose its Colour, and its league and division if you track them.
  4. Tap Add logo and pick an image.
  5. Tap Save.

To move a team to another sport, change the sport in its editor. Its roster goes with it.

Logos usually arrive on a white or flat-coloured background, which shows as a box behind the crest on the scoreboard. In the team editor tap Remove background.

  • The result shows over a checkerboard so you can see what became transparent.
  • Move the Sensitivity slider if a soft edge or a grainy image needs more room.
  • White inside the crest, such as the inside of a frame, is kept on purpose.
  • Tap Keep to use the result. Your original image is untouched, so you can try again.

This works on flat backgrounds. A photo of a jersey will not cut out cleanly, and the screen warns you when almost nothing was removed.

Tap a team to open its roster. Tap Add player and enter:

  • First name (required).
  • Last name (optional).
  • Number (optional). Players without a number show by name alone on the scoreboard and in the pickers.
  • A photo, if you want one.

Players are listed by number, then players without a number by last name.

Import a roster from pictures or a web page

Section titled “Import a roster from pictures or a web page”

Instead of typing each player, CheerCam can read a roster list. The reading happens on the phone. No picture or page is sent anywhere for it.

Start from either place:

  • On the Teams tab menu, New team from roster creates a team for the selected sport.
  • On a team’s roster, Import roster adds players to that team.

Then choose a source:

  • Pictures: pick one or more screenshots. Use several for a roster longer than one screen.
  • Camera: photograph a printed sheet, with Add another photo for more pages.
  • Web page: paste the roster page’s link and tap Read.

Nothing is saved until you review the list.

  • Each row has a tick, the number and the name. Fix anything the reading got wrong, or tap Add row for a player it missed.
  • A number marked check was hard to read. Look at it before saving.
  • A player already on the team is unticked and marked Already on the team.
  • A number already used by another player offers Keep or Replace.
  • For a new team, enter the team name or tap it on the picture, and tap Logo to drag a box over the crest.
  • A page listing a whole division asks which team to import.

If a web page gives no roster, take a screenshot of it and import the picture instead.

When you are signed in to YouTube, your teams, rosters, logos, player photos and scheduled games are kept the same on every phone signed in to the same channel. There are no accounts to create. The channel is what links the phones.

The Team library section in Settings shows the state:

  • Sync across phones shows when it last synced. Tap it to sync now.
  • Passphrase encrypts the library on the phone before it is uploaded, so nobody else can read it, CheerCam included. Enter the same passphrase on every phone that uses the channel. If you lose it, the copy on the server cannot be opened.
  • Remove cloud copy deletes the library from the server. Your phone keeps its teams.

Without a passphrase, the app warns you once before you add a player photo, because the photo would be stored unencrypted.

If two phones edit at the same time, the last change wins. Signing out of YouTube stops syncing and keeps your teams on the phone.

The menu on the Teams tab has Export teams and games, which writes your teams, rosters and game history to one file you can save or send. Import from a file reads such a file back on this phone or another one. Recordings are not included.

An import adds to what is on the phone and never deletes. If it fails part way, nothing is imported.
